Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills are the ability to make movements using the small muscles in our fingers, hands and wrists. We rely on these skills to do key tasks in school, at work, and in everyday life. These small movements come so naturally to most people that we usually don't think about them. But fine motor skills are complex.

Why are fine motor skills important?
Fine motor skills involve small muscles working with the brain and nervous system to control movements in areas such as the hands, fingers, lips, tongue and eyes. Developing fine motor skills helps children do things like eating, writing, manipulating objects and getting dressed.

Gross Motor Skills

Gross motor skills involve movements of the large muscles of the arms, legs, and torso. People rely on gross motor skills for activities at school, at work, at home, and in their everyday lives. People who struggle with gross motor skills have trouble doing whole-body movements such as running, jumping and even balancing.

Why are gross motor skills important?
Gross motor skills are important for overall physical development, posture, coordination and balance. Learning these basic movements help children move from one position to another in a smooth and efficient manner. They are also important for sports and leisure activities.

Fantasy Play

Fantasy play is non literal, meaning it is not realistic. It involves pretence and symbolism and greatly evokes a child's imaginative capacity. In this type of play, children take on different roles and are able to examine and understand various types of interpersonal interactions and socializing.

Why is fantasy play important?
This type of play improves the child's understanding of the world, contributes to the development of social understanding, improves emotional development, and exercises imaginative capacity. While engaging in fantasy play, children develop their own narratives and listen to other children's narratives.

Sandpit Play

Sandpit activity is any type of play that children engage in while using sand as an artistic medium. With sandpit play, children can do things like dig, scoop, pour, or push sand as well as lift, rake, pat, or shape it. When given a variety of sand play materials, the options for creating with sand become endless.

Why is sandpit play important?
Sand play helps with emotional development and socialization in children. In the sandpit, kids learn collaboration skills as they dig, carry, and move sand with other children and educators. They learn to wait patiently and take turns with the sand play materials we have on hand.

Teach Stories

Stories teach us about life, about ourselves and about others. Storytelling is a unique way for students to develop an understanding, respect and appreciation for other cultures, and can promote a positive attitude to people from different countries, races and religions. Storytelling creates intercultural understanding.

Why are teaching stories important?
In children, storytelling provides many psychological and educational benefits, such as enhanced imagination to help visualize spoken words, improved vocabulary, and more refined communication skills.

Songs & Rhymes

Nursery rhymes provide bite-sized learning opportunities for young children to develop key developmental skills and can often be the trigger for hours of creative and open-ended play. They are a powerful learning source in early literacy and enable children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language.

Why are songs and rhymes important?
Nursery rhymes are important for language acquisition and help with speech development. They also help children develop auditory skills such as discriminating between sounds and developing the ear for the music of words.

Friendship

Friendships can have a positive impact on a child's self-esteem and ability to navigate social situations throughout the rest of their lives. Child psychologists find early childhood friendships contribute to children's quality of life and help them adjust to changes in their environment.

Why is friendhip important?

Friendships provide children with more than just fun playmates. Friendships help children develop emotionally and morally. In interacting with friends, children learn many social skills, such as how to communicate, cooperate, and solve problems. They practice controlling their emotions and responding to the emotions of others.
